Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
