European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
