Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
