World Health Organization Issues Warning Over Severe Lack of Obesity Jabs

With over a billion people worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, more than two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are significant hurdles to widespread access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, notes the body.

Even under the present best projected scenario, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to widen availability, through strategies such as licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in multiple countries in 2026.
